Sri Lanka, the pearl-shaped island in the Indian Ocean, is a land of vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and a culinary heritage as diverse as its people. Sri Lankan cuisine is a symphony of flavours, colours, and textures that reflect the island’s rich history and its abundance of natural ingredients. From fiery curries to sweet indulgences, every bite tells a story of tradition, innovation, and love for food.
At its heart, Sri Lankan food is defined by the generous use of spices, fresh coconut, and a variety of herbs. The dishes are often a blend of bold flavours—sweet, spicy, tangy, and savoury—creating a sensory experience that lingers long after the meal is over. What sets Sri Lankan cuisine apart is its ability to strike a balance between complexity and comfort, offering dishes that are as satisfying as they are intriguing.
No visit to Sri Lanka is complete without indulging in the iconic rice and curry. This staple meal features a plate of steamed rice accompanied by a variety of curries, sambols, and pickles. From creamy dhal (lentil) curry to spicy fish curry, the variety is endless. Each dish is uniquely seasoned with roasted spices and tempered with coconut milk, creating layers of flavour that tantalise the palate.
Hoppers, or ‘appa’ in Sinhala, are a beloved Sri Lankan street food. These bowl-shaped pancakes made from fermented rice flour and coconut milk are crispy on the edges and soft in the centre. They can be enjoyed plain, with an egg baked into the centre, or paired with spicy sambols and curries.
Kottu roti is Sri Lanka’s answer to fast food, but with a twist. This dish involves chopping flatbread (roti) on a griddle with vegetables, eggs, and your choice of meat, all seasoned with a medley of spices. The rhythmic clanging of the blades as the kottu is prepared is a melody you’ll hear in many roadside eateries.
A gift from the Dutch Burgher community, lamprais is a feast wrapped in a banana leaf. It includes rice cooked in stock, accompanied by small portions of meat curry, frikkadels (meatballs), and sambols, all baked together to infuse the flavours. It’s a dish that’s as much about tradition as it is about taste.
Being an island, Sri Lanka boasts an abundance of seafood. From crab curry bursting with flavours to grilled fish marinated in tangy tamarind and chilli, seafood lovers are in for a treat. Don’t miss the famous Jaffna crab curry, which is a fiery delicacy cherished by locals and visitors alike.
No Sri Lankan meal is complete without a touch of sweetness. Watalappan, a creamy coconut custard flavoured with cardamom and jaggery, is a dessert that melts in your mouth. Kavum (oil cakes), kokis (crispy rice flour snacks), and kiri toffee (milk toffee) are just a few of the traditional treats that showcase the island’s love for sweets.
Sri Lankan cuisine is a testament to the island’s rich cultural tapestry. Influences from Indian, Malay, Portuguese, Dutch, and British cuisines have all left their mark, creating a unique fusion of flavours. Traditional cooking methods, such as clay pot cooking and slow roasting spices, further enhance the authenticity and depth of Sri Lankan dishes.
Exploring Sri Lankan cuisine is more than just savouring delicious food; it’s an immersion into the island’s soul. Whether you’re relishing a homemade meal in a village, sampling street food in bustling markets, or dining at a fine restaurant, each dish offers a story of the island’s heritage and hospitality.
So, pack your appetite and embark on a flavourful journey through Sri Lanka. The island’s culinary delights promise an experience that will leave you craving more, long after you’ve taken your last bite.

We spent 14 wonderful days in Japan seeing all of the sights and trying wonderful food. I have travelled all over the world, and I think it would have been very difficult to really feel like I was on vacation in Japan if we had not used this company. Most people in Japan do not speak English well, so without our fabulous guides and drivers, we would have had an uncomfortable trip, and we would have struggled to accomplish our goals....
We have just returned from a great holiday in Japan. We were met at the airport, booked in at hotels, coach trips, taken to train stations and seen off on our journey to be met at our journey end all by prompt very pleasant guides. We travelled on various forms of transport so needed to be at the right place at the right time. The guides lived locally and they had the local knowledge of the area they lived in which was an insight into how they lived through the seas...
Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to visit and I am glad we had Himanthi looking after us on this trip who knew how to best get around the country at the time of year we were visiting. We had a private driver/guide the whole way. It really is the easiest way to get around the island and you would not want to drive yourself over there. Our guide was an absolute gent and very flexible with the itinerary. I loved the time we stopped at the side of the road at a tiny litt...
The holiday arranged by you was brilliant. Wendy and I were totally enthralled by all we saw. I think our most favourite was looking for the elephants in the jungle. I don’t think we will ever forget that. We saw about 15 elephants, just wonderful. The Hotels booked for us were good. I must commend Ravi to you. He was so nice. He was always on time and delivered us safely to where we were going. Nothing was too much trouble plus he was very knowledgeable. In ...
My trip was incredible! Himanthi planned the perfect vacation with exactly what I asked for and everything was well laid out, well planned, and I loved it!...
Had a great time in Vietnam! Guides in Hanoi and Saigon were outstanding!! I’m really glad I was able to do the Mekong tour with a Tuk Tuk. It was an amazing experience!...
