Nestled in the heart of Sri Lanka, Gal Oya National Park is a sanctuary of biodiversity and natural splendor. Spanning over 25,000 hectares, it is renowned for its lush greenery, pristine waters, and diverse wildlife. But what truly sets Gal Oya apart is its lesser-known human connection—the Vedda community, Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, some of whom still live in ancient caves within the park.
Gal Oya is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts. Its centerpiece is the Senanayake Samudraya, the largest reservoir in Sri Lanka. The park’s unique landscape includes dense forests, rolling hills, and scattered grasslands, making it a haven for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Visitors often embark on boat safaris to witness breathtaking sights of elephants swimming between islands, a spectacle unique to this park.
Birdwatchers flock to Gal Oya to observe over 150 species of birds, while trekkers revel in the serene beauty of its trails. The park is also home to leopards, sloth bears, deer, and an abundance of aquatic life. Yet, Gal Oya’s true allure lies beyond its natural wonders.
The Vedda community has lived in harmony with nature for thousands of years. Known as the island’s original inhabitants, their traditions and practices are deeply intertwined with the environment. A few members of this community still inhabit caves within Gal Oya National Park, preserving a lifestyle that dates back to the Stone Age.
These cave dwellers live minimally, relying on the forest for sustenance. They gather honey, fruits, and medicinal plants, and occasionally hunt using traditional bows and arrows. Their intimate knowledge of the forest—from tracking animals to identifying rare plants—is astonishing and invaluable.
Visiting the surviving cave dwellers offers a rare glimpse into a vanishing way of life. Guided by Vedda elders, visitors can explore the caves adorned with ancient symbols and learn about their sustainable living practices. The elders share stories of their ancestors, their connection to the land, and their struggles to preserve their culture in a rapidly modernizing world.
A highlight of this experience is the ritual of ‘Kiri Koraha’—a dance and prayer ceremony performed to honor the spirits of the forest. Witnessing this ritual is a humbling reminder of humanity’s deep- rooted bond with nature.
Despite their resilience, the Vedda community faces numerous challenges. Encroaching development, deforestation, and loss of traditional lands threaten their existence. However, efforts are underway to protect their heritage. Organizations and the Sri Lankan government are working together to promote eco-tourism and provide resources to support the Vedda people.
Visitors to Gal Oya are encouraged to respect the community’s privacy and traditions. By supporting sustainable tourism, you contribute to the preservation of both the natural environment and the cultural legacy of the Vedda.
Gal Oya National Park is more than just a destination; it is a journey into the heart of Sri Lanka’s natural and cultural heritage. Whether you are mesmerized by the park’s wildlife or captivated by the wisdom of its indigenous people, a visit to Gal Oya promises an unforgettable experience.
Pack your sense of wonder and venture into Gal Oya’s verdant embrace. Here, nature and humanity coexist in a delicate balance, offering lessons of resilience, respect, and reverence for the world we all share.

We spent 14 wonderful days in Japan seeing all of the sights and trying wonderful food. I have travelled all over the world, and I think it would have been very difficult to really feel like I was on vacation in Japan if we had not used this company. Most people in Japan do not speak English well, so without our fabulous guides and drivers, we would have had an uncomfortable trip, and we would have struggled to accomplish our goals....
We have just returned from a great holiday in Japan. We were met at the airport, booked in at hotels, coach trips, taken to train stations and seen off on our journey to be met at our journey end all by prompt very pleasant guides. We travelled on various forms of transport so needed to be at the right place at the right time. The guides lived locally and they had the local knowledge of the area they lived in which was an insight into how they lived through the seas...
Sri Lanka is a wonderful place to visit and I am glad we had Himanthi looking after us on this trip who knew how to best get around the country at the time of year we were visiting. We had a private driver/guide the whole way. It really is the easiest way to get around the island and you would not want to drive yourself over there. Our guide was an absolute gent and very flexible with the itinerary. I loved the time we stopped at the side of the road at a tiny litt...
The holiday arranged by you was brilliant. Wendy and I were totally enthralled by all we saw. I think our most favourite was looking for the elephants in the jungle. I don’t think we will ever forget that. We saw about 15 elephants, just wonderful. The Hotels booked for us were good. I must commend Ravi to you. He was so nice. He was always on time and delivered us safely to where we were going. Nothing was too much trouble plus he was very knowledgeable. In ...
